Amplitude- and phase-resolved nano-spectral imaging of phonon polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride
Phonon polaritons are quasiparticles resulting from strong coupling of
photons with optical phonons. Excitation and control of these quasiparticles in
2D materials offer the opportunity to confine and transport light at the
nanoscale. Here, we image the phonon polariton (PhP) spectral response in thin
hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystals as a representative 2D material using
amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field interferometry with broadband mid-IR
synchrotron radiation. The large spectral bandwidth enables the simultaneous
measurement of both out-of-plane (780 cm-1) and in-plane (1370 cm-1) hBN phonon
modes. In contrast to the strong and dispersive in-plane mode, the out-of-plane
mode PhP response is weak. Measurements of the PhP wavelength reveal a
proportional dependence on sample thickness for thin hBN flakes, which can be
understood by a general model describing two-dimensional polariton excitation

GILP: An Interactive Tool for Visualizing the Simplex Algorithm
The Simplex algorithm for solving linear programs-one of Computing in Science
& Engineering's top 10 most influential algorithms of the 20th century-is an
important topic in many algorithms courses. While the Simplex algorithm relies
on intuitive geometric ideas, the computationally-involved mechanics of the
algorithm can obfuscate a geometric understanding. In this paper, we present
gilp, an easy-to-use Simplex algorithm visualization tool designed to
explicitly connect the mechanical steps of the algorithm with their geometric
interpretation. We provide an extensive library with example visualizations,
and our tool allows an instructor to quickly produce custom interactive HTML
files for students to experiment with the algorithm (without requiring students
to install anything!). The tool can also be used for interactive assignments in
Jupyter notebooks, and has been incorporated into a forthcoming Data Science
and Decision Making interactive textbook. In this paper, we first describe how
the tool fits into the existing literature on algorithm visualizations: how it
was designed to facilitate student engagement and instructor adoption, and how
it substantially extends existing algorithm visualization tools for Simplex. We
then describe the development and usage of the tool, and report feedback from
its use in a course with roughly 100 students. Student feedback was
overwhelmingly positive, with students finding the tool easy to use: it
effectively helped them link the algebraic and geometrical views of the Simplex
algorithm and understand its nuances. Finally, gilp is open-source, includes an
extension to visualizing linear programming-based branch and bound, and is
readily amenable to further extensions.Comment: ACM SIGCSE 2023 Manuscript, 13 pages, 5 figure
The Solar Neighborhood. XXXIV. A Search for Planets Orbiting Nearby M Dwarfs using Astrometry
Astrometric measurements are presented for seven nearby stars with previously
detected planets: six M dwarfs (GJ 317, GJ 667C, GJ 581, GJ 849, GJ 876, and GJ
1214) and one K dwarf (BD 10 3166). Measurements are also presented for six
additional nearby M dwarfs without known planets, but which are more favorable
to astrometric detections of low mass companions, as well as three binary
systems for which we provide astrometric orbit solutions. Observations have
baselines of three to thirteen years, and were made as part of the RECONS
long-term astrometry and photometry program at the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9m telescope.
We provide trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for all 16 systems, and
perform an extensive analysis of the astrometric residuals to determine the
minimum detectable companion mass for the 12 M dwarfs not having close stellar
secondaries. For the six M dwarfs with known planets, we are not sensitive to
planets, but can rule out the presence of all but the least massive brown
dwarfs at periods of 2 - 12 years. For the six more astrometrically favorable M
dwarfs, we conclude that none have brown dwarf companions, and are sensitive to
companions with masses as low as 1 for periods longer than two years.
In particular, we conclude that Proxima Centauri has no Jovian companions at
orbital periods of 2 - 12 years. These results complement previously published
M dwarf planet occurrence rates by providing astrometrically determined upper
mass limits on potential super-Jupiter companions at orbits of two years and
longer. As part of a continuing survey, these results are consistent with the
paucity of super-Jupiter and brown dwarf companions we find among the over 250
red dwarfs within 25 pc observed longer than five years in our astrometric
program.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A
A millimeter-wave kinetic inductance detector camera for long-range imaging through optical obscurants
Millimeter-wave imaging provides a promising option for long-range target detection through optical obscurants such as fog, which often occur in marine environments. Given this motivation, we are currently developing a 150 GHz polarization-sensitive imager using a relatively new type of superconducting pair-breaking detector, the kinetic inductance detector (KID). This imager will be paired with a 1.5 m telescope to obtain an angular resolution of 0.09° over a 3.5° field of view using 3,840 KIDs. We have fully characterized a prototype KID array, which shows excellent performance with noise strongly limited by the irreducible fluctuations from the ambient temperature background. Full-scale KID arrays are now being fabricated and characterized for a planned demonstration in a maritime environment later this year
An efficient basis set representation for calculating electrons in molecules
The method of McCurdy, Baertschy, and Rescigno, J. Phys. B, 37, R137 (2004)
is generalized to obtain a straightforward, surprisingly accurate, and scalable
numerical representation for calculating the electronic wave functions of
molecules. It uses a basis set of product sinc functions arrayed on a Cartesian
grid, and yields 1 kcal/mol precision for valence transition energies with a
grid resolution of approximately 0.1 bohr. The Coulomb matrix elements are
replaced with matrix elements obtained from the kinetic energy operator. A
resolution-of-the-identity approximation renders the primitive one- and
two-electron matrix elements diagonal; in other words, the Coulomb operator is
local with respect to the grid indices. The calculation of contracted
two-electron matrix elements among orbitals requires only O(N log(N))
multiplication operations, not O(N^4), where N is the number of basis
functions; N = n^3 on cubic grids. The representation not only is numerically
expedient, but also produces energies and properties superior to those
calculated variationally. Absolute energies, absorption cross sections,
transition energies, and ionization potentials are reported for one- (He^+,
H_2^+ ), two- (H_2, He), ten- (CH_4) and 56-electron (C_8H_8) systems.Comment: Submitted to JC
Methodology for studying strain inhomogeneities in polycrystalline thin films during in situ thermal loading using coherent x-ray diffraction
International audienceCoherent x-ray diffraction is used to investigate the mechanical properties of a single grain within a polycrystalline thin film in situ during a thermal cycle. Both the experimental approach and finite element simulation are described. Coherent diffraction from a single grain has been monitored in situ at different temperatures. This experiment offers unique perspectives for the study of the mechanical properties of nano-objects
